& The Wooden Ruler

You can create complete scenes on your ruler.

I have done winter scenes showing a country lane with a village or farm in the background.

I have also created jungles and playgrounds.

You will find the roller stamps from "Clear Snap" work very well for this type of project.

It is a lot of fun to create your rulers to fit the person you plan to give them to.

These make wonderful gifts for the start of the school year of for Christmas.

We often do them as Christmas presents for my daughters school friends.

I have also done them as "first day of school" gifts for the children of friends and family.

This ruler is very easy to create.

I purchased the wood from Lowes and had my husband cut it into 10 inch lengths.

I used a tape measure to mark off the quarter, half and inches.

I then burned the marks using a fine tip on a wood burning tool.

Once the marks have been made permanent, it is time to have fun.

Once the ruler has been burned, you are ready to begin embellishing it with your stamps.

Try to select stamps which will fit on the ruler.

Keep as much of the finished design below the markings as possible.

I find that permanent black ink works very well on wood.

When your design is complete you may color it in.

I find that oil color pencils work well.

I use the ones produced by "Walnut Hollow" which are usually found

in the wood carving section of your local craft store.

They come in sets of 12 in pastel and standard.

These usually retail for about $10.00 and they also come in a set of 24 standard colors for about $20.00.

I usually wait until they are on sale. Michael's Moonlight sales are an excellent time to get them at 40% off retail.

If an adult will do the wood burning, a child could do the stamping and coloring to make birthday, school, or Christmas gifts which would mean a great deal to those who receive them as gifts. This is also a good project for a beginner.

The stamps used in this ruler include:

UAA001 Mini Bird - 199 from Stampendous

UAA002 Side Bird - 199 from Stampendous

T-1519 Front (Girl in Overalls) from Art Impressions
