Play Clay

Materials needed:

1/2 cup salt

1/2 cup hot water

1/4 cup cold water

1/2 cup cornstarch

Instructions:

1) In a saucepan, mix salt and hot water and heat to boiling point.

2) Stir cold water into cornstarch in a small bowl.

3) Add cornstarch mixture to boiling water while stirring vigorously to break up all lumps.

4) Over low heat, while stirring constantly, bring mixture to consistency of stiff pie dough.

5) Remove from heat and turn out onto a breadboard or cutting board to cool.

6) When mixture is cool enough to handle, knead until smooth and workable.

Makes 1-1/2 cups.

Mixture has a grainy texture and works well when flattened with a rolling pin and cut into shapes.

Makes a nice base for ornaments. Play Clay will dry and harden in 1 to 2 days.

When dry it is white and can be painted with enamels.

You may speed up the drying process by baking on a cookie sheet in an oven at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 1 hour.

To store Play Clay, wrap in foil or plastic wrap and store in air-tight container.

It may be kept this way without refrigeration for days.
